Waited a LONG time for this DVD to be released. Have been watching a 25 YEAR-OLD VHS that has been dieing a slow death. U2 hasn''t been at the top of my favorites list since Joshua Tree. THIS concert is from WAY back in the beginning when I only heard them on college radio. This captures a group of younger men who performed with a simple, honest passion and energy. I wouldn''t see them now if someone gave me tickets, but I would give almost anything to have seen them back then. This concert is one for the ages!

Some reviewers have complained about the video quality, but keep in mind that this was recorded in the days of VHS. There are some anomalies such as light trails when the camera moves across a spotlight, and it''s slightly grainy if you''re right on top of the screen. (Keep in mind that it was rainy/foggy during the show.) That being said, it''s VERY watchable, especially if you like concert videos. The editing flows well, and the audio is pretty good.

The CD is NOT from this concert. It is just a reissue of the old "Under a Blood Red Sky" CD.

A foggy and wet evening at Red Rocks with U2

Great live album of early U2 as they struggled to achieve stardom. A lot of energy at this rain soaked, foggy show at Denver''s famous Red Rocks amphitheater. I was there and a number of my photos are featured in this re mastered album.

Two of things that make U2 such as special band is their passion and energy. While these traits are present on their studio albums, they come to the front in their live performances. Under A Blood Red Sky perfectly captures all their raw emotions and energy. The album opens with the soaring "Gloria" from their October album and then sieges into "11 O''Clock Tick Tock". Next is a scorching version of their first hit "I Will Follow". "Party Girl" is a great lost U2 song. It was originally issued as a b-side and available on imports only. It starts off with just the Edge strumming his guitar and builds up to a powerful crescendo. Bono states on the record that "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is not a rebel song, but it is definitely an anthem. Bono has always had a bit of a preacher in him and as he urges the crowd to chant "no more", the album takes on the feel of an old time revival. After whipping things up to a fever pitch, "The Electric Co." and "New Year''s Day" follow and they mellow things out. The hymn-like "40" is the final track and the album ends on a poignant note with just the crowd singing the chorus. For those of you who may only be familiar with the U2 of the 90''s and their mammoth Pop Mart and Zooropa concerts, this album is a fine sampler of their earlier efforts. While the approach is simpler in nature, it produces just as big of a sound. This deluxe edition is superb on several levels. First it contains the full concert video presented for the first time on dvd. The visual setting of the band in this breath-taking amphitheater perfectly compliments the music. The picture is crisp and clean with the sound being excellent. Then there is the packaging that has the cd and dvd housed in what looks like a hard covered book. The booklet contains a lengthy text as well as rare photos including ones from a different set of shows at Colorado State University.

Even though I give U2''s "Under A Blood Red Sky" five stars, this amazing EP STILL screams for a deluxe version. When this was originally released, it came out as a budget EP at a special price, and it even clocked in at many a band''s album length. Eight songs at forty minutes, covering the band''s first three albums.

There were stories at the time that so many music-producer buffs wanted to work with the band that Jimmy Iovine slashed his superstar fee for the opportunity to work with U2. It was really to the band''s benefit, as he completely stripped away Steve Lillywhite''s echo-heavy and reverb-drenched production, and gave U2 a crystal clean mix. It caught the band in great form, cocky and confident, and on the brink of the second stage of their career. That clarity also gave many people their first real glimpse at just how amazing The Edge''s guitar playing is and how much he brings to the band.

Even more interesting is that the band was eager to push themselves and their audience even at this early stage of the game. Band favorites like "I Will Follow" and "New Year''s Day" are mixed in with "11 O''Clock Tick Tock" and "Trash Trampoline and Party Girl." And despite Bono''s protestations, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" will always be a rebel song in my heart.

Why I still think this album could be upgraded is that I am sure somewhere the entire Red Rocks concert is on tape. Like expanded editions of The Who''s "Live At Leeds," Peter Frampton''s "Frampton Comes Alive," Elton John''s "Here and There" and David Bowie''s "Stage," "Live At Red Rocks" (and the U2 catalog overall!) deserves an upgrade. While the deluxe CD/DVD now includes the Red Rocks DVD and the CD tracks are now listed with the locations credited, what is stopping Island and U2 fron a full concert CD release?

U2''s ''Under A Blood Red Sky'' is a superb live record from U2. It''s one of the best live records of the ''80s in my opinion. The eight songs here are all essential for any U2 fan. This is a must-own for any U2 lover.

But, I do have a few things to say for the U2 collector.

-First, not all of the songs here were recorded at Red Rocks, making this more of a live album than a soundtrack to a film. These were all taken during three stops on the ''War'' tour. Only two were recorded at Red Rocks, and those were ''Gloria'' and ''Party Girl.'' ''I Will Follow,'' ''Electric Co.,'' ''New Year''s Day,'' ''Sunday Bloody Sunday'' and ''40'' were all recorded in Germany, and ''11 O'' Clock Tick Tock'' was recorded in Boston. All were recorded in 1983.

-The second is more of a note to collectors than casual fans. ''The Electric Co.'' has a snippit chopped off. Bono sings ''Send In The Clowns'' in the middle of the song, and because of copyright issues, Island was forced to remove the song from the CD release. This won''t bother casual U2 fans, but for die-hards like me, it is a tad annoying.

If you collect bootlegs like I do, you probably have the whole Red Rocks show and the full version of ''Electric Co.'' that was featured on the vinyl.

But still, despite that one flaw about the edited version of ''The Electric Co.,'' this is a superb live album. One of the best from U2.

Highly recommended. A must-listen live album. ENJOY!!!

A couple of the songs from the EP were recorded at Red Rocks, but the majority were recorded at the Lorelei in St. Goarshausen, Germany, an an outdoor amphi-theatre situated along the Rhine River. I was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army then and was lucky enough to attend that concert. Several bands performed that day: Steve Miller, Joe Cocker, U2, The Stray Cats. U2 stole the show that day (Joe Cocker was a close second). From the moment they entered the stage, Bono and the band had the crowd in the palm of their hands. The most memorable moment was during the final encore song, "40", when those of us in the crowd continued to sing the refrain "How long to sing this song?" for several minutes after the band had finally left the stage. Of all the concerts I''ve attend over the past 30 plus years, this one stands out as one of the greatest. If you want to get a taste of this great band performing live in their early days, you owe it to yourself to buy this EP.

I bought this as a vinyl EP record when it first came out in 1983 or so, and played it until the grooves wore out. It is definitely one of the great musical documents of the era - one of my favorites - and captures a moment in time that I have been reliving for 25 years.

I was thrilled when the original CD version came out in the early 90s, but like many people, was shocked to find that they had cut a part out of the middle of The Electric Co., where Bono is doing some vocal riffing and climbing the tower on the side of the stage. It''s the pivotal part of the song, and when you know it''s there it''s like cutting the heart out of the song. I don''t know what it sounds like if you''ve never heard the uncut version, but to me it entirely kills it. All I can figure is there were some royalty issues concerning "Send in the Clowns" which he is riffing on. The uncut VHS tape also went out of print a long time ago.

After waiting for many years for this to be remastered, I was hoping so much that they would restore the uncut version of the song. You''d think after all these years any copyright problems could be taken care of. However, the cut is still there, and it is in fact, EVEN BIGGER. Yes, there is an even bigger chunk out of the song at the same place. I guess they thought it would flow better that way, but it still sounds like crap. I''ve never heard any official explaination, but I suppose it''s possible that the uncut tapes simply don''t exist anymore. After all, this was recorded for a German TV show, not for a live album or with any notion that we''d be using it 25 years later. Either that or it''s just laziness or greed. I don''t know, but it''s very disappointing.

Overall, the remastering is OK, but the audio quality is not really that much better than the original CD, there aren''t any of the additional songs that are on the new DVD, and it has an even worse cut in the Electric Co. (Note that the DVD has the same cut, as well as a couple of other similar edits. The entire part where Bono climbs the tower is gone. If you want to see that you need to get an old VHS copy.) So, if you already have the original CD, you might not feel the need to buy this one. If you are expecting it to be uncut like the original EP, you will be disappointed. Get the DVD for the additional songs, though - they should have at least put them on the CD.

In 1983, I had just turned 16 years old, and this concert was my introduction to U2. It was one of those unforgettable musical moments that still holds a special place for me. What a great, simple, pure, and innocent time this was! There were no small cars hanging from the rafters, huge video screens, or giant lemons. It was just a great, uplifting rock n'' roll concert.
The DVD is great. It captures everything nicely. Yes, even the red lines from the camera tube burn in. But, that was just how it was filmed. The packaging is very well done. I wish there would have been some current commentary/memories about the show from the band themselves. It is always great when artists look back, and we see their reaction when they look at some old footage. Wonder what Bono would say about his hair?
Finally, I still own the original cassette tape "Under A Blood Red Sky" from 1983 that has the unedited version of "Electric Co" with the "Send In The Clowns" reference. A couple of years later, I bought the CD, with the hacked up edit included. I agree with the other reviewer, on the CD, the edit in "Electric Co" sounds like a mistake. It makes me cringe when I hear it. I am usually against editing anything the artists put forth. After all these years, no agreement could have been reached to put the edit back in? Couldn''t Bono have used his political power of persuasion to get it done? It is ironic, because I believe that the part that is edited out is actually the scene used for the cover of "Under A Blood Red Sky". The DVD version of "Electric Co", on the other hand, is perfectly done. The edit overlaps the solo to the next verse beautifully. I watched it again, and I still can''t tell where the actual edit is, it is that flawless. Despite all that, this is the DVD that I have been waiting a long time for, and am very happy with the whole package. Even after 25 years, this performance is still a treasure, Thanks U2!

A very enjoyable album from before U2 took a significant change of direction. The purists may be disappointed to know that the "Send in the Clowns" section in Electric Co. as heard on the original vinyl remains edited out on CD. (At least one early CD edition contains this section.) I gather there are copyright/licensing/whatever issues around this. Also the CD runs through without the inbetween side fades, which suits me just fine as it brings a greater continuity rather than matching the vinyl just for the sake of it. The DVD is enjoyable with way more tracks than the CD, and apparently more than the original VHS version too. There is also hidden content, which I couldn''t access on a standalone DVD player, but could via a laptop.
